I was nervous about recording outside the UK because my music sounds English and I like that, but in fact, it didn’t make any difference. Despite the high-profile producer and the California-studio setting, the album never feels too fussy, too happy, or too slick.

Tape Deck Heart isn’t as immediate as England Keep My Bones, but it’s just as good (and might even be better, although I haven’t decided for sure yet). Nicknamed, " Sauron, the all seeing eye," by Turner and his bandmates, Costey often made the band perform multiple takes in the studio, with Turner stating: "He brings an almost autistic eye for detail.I’m glad I've had the opportunity to do the extended version for this one – all these songs belong together. One of the reasons I like him so much is because, like the review says, he "melt[s] away the facades and pretensions until all that remains is good music". Turner elaborated, "I tell people it's about dancing but it's really a song about punk rock and the pleasantly surprising revelation that, at 31, my ethics and approach to music are the same as when I was 15. Comparing the album's lyrical and thematic content to his previous album, England Keep My Bones (2011), Turner noted: "This record isn't about England at all — I did that last time round. in October 2012, with his road band The Sleeping Souls and producer Rich Costey (Muse, Foster the People).

Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung.Pressed on two limited edition burnt red vinyl, the original album is accompanied by a second LP of previously unreleased ‘The Evolution Demos’, mastered and cut by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. So it irks me a little bit when people say that it’s so much better than everything else he’s done when the albums that came after have continually refined that sound. The lyrics speak toward everything Frank’s music has always been about : melting away the facades and pretensions until all that remains is good music. Turner stated: "There’s a lot of stuff on this record about loss and failure in relationships, about what happens when something that was supposed to be timeless runs out of time. Departing from Anglocentric lyrics (except on The Fisher King Blues and Broken Piano) and, to some degree, from punk, it’s his most accessible, and arguably strongest, album to date.

The first single from the album was "Recovery", which was released on 5 March 2013 and the music video was released the same day. The artwork features designs by two tattooists - a painting of Frank on the O-Card by Matt Hunt, and gatefold sleeve illustrations by Heather Ann Law. Explaining the album's title, Turner stated, "A 'Tape Deck Heart' is someone who has a love of music above anything else. Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings]. Four Simple Words” may seem like just a silly, light-hearted song about wanting to dance, but the ascending piano line in the chorus, the guitar solo, and the vibrant drums elevate it to a fantastic rock song with a “Bohemian Rhapsody”-esque structure.

This is much more of a traditional rock record than anything else Frank has done, and that’s a good thing because it means that it’s probably the most consistent album he’s made.
